What does a myotherapist do?
A myotherapist is a healthcare professional specialising in treating soft tissue pain, dysfunction and injury. They use a range of manual techniques such as massage, trigger point therapy, dry needling, cupping, stretching and exercise prescription to alleviate pain and improve the function of muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and joints.
Myotherapists work with clients who have acute or chronic musculoskeletal conditions, sports injuries, postural imbalances, and pain or discomfort related to daily activities. They conduct a thorough assessment of the client’s medical history, physical condition and lifestyle factors to develop a personalized treatment plan that targets the underlying cause of the problem.
The goal of myotherapy is to relieve pain, improve mobility, restore function and prevent further injury. Myotherapists may advise on posture, ergonomics, exercise and lifestyle modifications to help clients maintain optimal musculoskeletal health.
Myotherapy and massage are two distinct professions with different aims and objectives, health fund rebates, and educational pathways. In common with physiotherapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors, myotherapists may use massage in their treatments when warranted, but they also use a variety of other techniques outlined above.
